The youth band orchestra of Balmazujvaros was established in 1967 with the support of the Veres Peter Cultural Centre. The formation first became known as Pioneer Orchestra, later the name was changed to Youth Guard Orchestra. Finally in 1990 the group was named Bekton Youth Wind Orchestra and became an association in January 1997.
The orchestra performs in several formations – as a concert wind orchestra as well as a march band with majorettes. The art formation gained acclaim for the town of Balmazujvaros not only in Hungary but all over Europe demonstrating the skill of Hungarian musicians concert by concert. About 40-50 performances are given each year half of which is abroad. We have had the honour of playing in such countries as Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, Holland, Poland, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland and China.
The orchestra is composed of 65 members. Its repertoire, meeting
even the most specific audience demands, includes classical wind music, modern adaptations as well as popular film soundtracks.
Its first and foremost objective is to develop wind music culture, cultivate and preserve wind music traditions. In order to achieve this, the orchestra welcomes the rising generation of the local music school and have always supported young gifted wind players and majorettes with instruments or funds.
The orchestra has been enjoying support from the local council. Received funds have been used to improve the stock of musical instruments and provide for the costs of travelling with the majorettes.
Another majority of the budget comes from grants and 1% of tax offered by the enthusiastic audiences, local businesses and companies.
